Works of a pen

India Mae Barton

Hey, my name is India Mae Barton. I’m 23 years old, I live in Ely, Cambridge, and I am an artist specializing in creating photo-like drawings using a biro pen.

Art has always played a huge part in my life. I’ve enjoyed painting, sketching, and making doodles from a really young age. I’ve been drawing since I was able to pick up a pencil, and I’ve spent years of my life filling up sketchbook after sketchbook. There are so many different artists that have inspired me to do what I do, from the sketches by Picasso to the surreal paintings of Dalí. I’ve grown up in an environment filled with creativity, with my parents both attending art college and having careers in the art industry. They are my biggest influences, and it’s certainly where I get my creativity from.

I consider myself a realism artist, and my main focus is portraiture. I find the human face so interesting to study; every face is so complex and different, it is incredibly intriguing to try and create as much of a photo-realistic drawing as I possibly can. With all the different facial expressions each person can make, I challenge myself to make the character come to life. I also work with drawing animals, and I take on commissions for both people and pet portraits.

It was at the age of 14 I first started using a biro pen to create my art, and over the years, I have always pushed myself to try and perfect my skill. I’ve found that I can get so much more depth and detail using a biro compared to pencils, and it shows well in my work. I’ve recently begun working with colored biros to try and broaden my range, which so far is going well. I’ve had a great response from people close to me, and I’ve found I’m improving every day.
